The Colnago G5-X is a refined gravel racer, incorporating modern advancements tailored for performance without sacrificing the classic Italian touch.

Discovering Italian Artistry in Cycling

The experience of walking through Florence’s Uffizi Gallery immerses you in the genius of Italian masters like Botticelli and Michelangelo. Majestic art surrounds you; yet, my visit was motivated not by a quest for culture but to shake off the remnants of jet lag before four exhilarating days on the bike in the stunning hills of Tuscany.
Now, with a new gravel bike from Colnago, a brand steeped in cycling heritage, I was eager to hit the iconic strade bianche for some real-world testing.

The Colnago Legend
Colnago’s reputation has been architected over more than 70 years, making it one of cycling’s most respected brands. Many elite cyclists have achieved memorable victories on their exquisitely designed bikes. Colnago bicycles have graced the podiums of high-stakes races worldwide, from Grand Tours to classic monuments. Most recently, the brand has gained recognition thanks to rider Tadej Pogačar, a dominant force in the cycling world who has secured multiple Tour de France titles among numerous other achievements.

Colnago and Gravel
Despite Colnago’s prestige in the road cycling scene, it hasn't historically been the go-to brand for gravel bikes. This market has largely been led by American giants such as Specialized and Trek—brands that were quick to embrace the gravel bike trend. Colnago entered this arena later than most, debuting its G3-X model in November 2019, well after several U.S. brands had launched their own gravel-specific models.

The G3-X was built on a framework influenced by Colnago’s successful cyclocross designs. While it brought some notable features, its 42mm tire clearance was somewhat limiting compared to what gravel enthusiasts might expect in today’s market. Subsequent models, like the G4-X and C68 Gravel, focused more on versatility but couldn’t quite shake the racing-centric characteristics that defined Colnago’s legacy.

The New G5-X
Building on feedback from riders and enthusiasts, the G5-X represents a focused attempt by Colnago to meet the demands of modern gravel racing. The engineering team, under the guidance of Davide Fumagalli, who has a racing background himself, introduced significant advancements in tire clearance, geometry, storage solutions, and overall riding comfort.

During my four days of riding in Tuscany, I tested the G5-X over various terrains from smooth, scenic gravel roads to more rugged singletrack segments. While my experience was not exhaustive, it provided valuable insights into the bike’s capabilities.

Tire Clearance
The G5-X boasts expanded tire clearance, officially set to accommodate tires up to 53mm in width. This represents a substantial increase compared to previous models and places it well within the competitive landscape. However, some riders may still find themselves looking for greater clearance options available in other brands.

While testing, I installed 50mm Goodyear XPLR tubeless tires that performed admirably on smoother terrains. However, their grip faltered in technical sections, leading to damage during rough descents. Considering the increasing popularity of wider tires, future models might benefit from options that support even larger sizes.

Geometry
Adjustments to the bike’s geometry have been made with performance in mind. A slacker head angle enhances confidence on descents and rougher terrain, while a longer wheelbase improves stability. Collectively, these updates elevate the G5-X's handling abilities, allowing riders to choose their lines with precision over choppy sections.

On singletrack and descending fast through gravel, the composure of the G5-X was palpable; it inspires a level of trust that challenges other models to compete.

Storage
For gravel riders, integrated storage is more than a luxury; it's a necessity. The G5-X features innovative in-frame storage, allowing vital repair tools to be safely tucked away. The access mechanism for the storage compartment is straightforward and intuitive, making it easy to retrieve items during a ride.

However, the G5-X might fall short for bikepackers, as it lacks additional attachment options found on more adventure-oriented gravel bikes. While this may not impact dedicated racers, those requiring versatility for longer rides could find this limitation significant.

Rider Comfort
Unlike some of its predecessors, the G5-X prioritizes rider comfort, mitigating the overly stiff ride quality that was a point of contention among critics. Utilizing a standard 27.2mm diameter round seatpost allows for better customization, opening up options for riders wishing to enhance comfort further with flex or dropper posts.

My tests revealed that the G5-X strikes an impressive balance between compliance and performance. This model lives up to Colnago’s promise of a refined ride quality, catering to both recreational and competitive riders alike.

More G5-X Details
The G5-X comes in two attractive color options and several configurations. It’s worth noting that despite the luxurious design, it holds a price point that, while significant, isn't as exorbitant as some of Colnago’s traditional road models. Nevertheless, it remains a premium offering in the gravel bike category.

Current offerings include SRAM’s XPLR AXS groupsets across three build options. However, none of these include a power meter—an odd oversight for a brand that markets itself towards performance-oriented riders. When it comes to sizing, make sure to verify measurements as Colnago uses a different numbering system from many competitors.

Because It’s a Colnago
Ultimately, the G5-X embodies the essence of what Colnago represents in the cycling world: a commitment to high performance, heritage, and artistry in design. For those who seek the very best in gravel bikes, the G5-X is without a doubt an option to consider, recognizing that, like a coveted Italian sports car, its value lies as much in its brand prestige as in its technical specifications.

The G5-X may not have the highest tire clearance or the most extensive cargo capabilities, but it excels in performance and handling, remaining true to the Colnago legacy of quality craftsmanship. In an era when bicycles can sometimes feel homogenous, the distinct allure of a Colnago remains as compelling as ever. When choosing between bikes, the name on the downtube resonates deeply, signifying a connection not just to a brand, but to a storied heritage that continues to define cycling excellence.
